Barre Community History Project -

When the sixth grade class really got going in 2005, they were able to discover for themselves the broad range of materials that could be used for historical research. The students were divided into three groups which were used as the work groups for this project. For the research field trip, each group had a different task.

One group did documentary research at the Vermont Historical Society. Another researched secondary sources and photographs at the Aldrich Public Library, and the third group visited the Barre Granite Museum Visitors' Center, located in one of the Depot buildings and did field research around Depot Square and along the railway tracks where they actually recovered an artifact in the form of a railroad spike.

Back in the classroom, the students discussed and analyzed the materials they had gathered with members of the Barre Historical Society and each other.
